Russian rivers dispose over unique hydrotechnics and thus belong to the national treasures of this country. They are intensively used for the purposes of providing service for the territory of 68 entities of the Russian Federation to satisfy its demands in movements of cargoes and passengers. They also provide interbasin-connections, as well as exports/imports, recreational activities and passenger transport.
The terms of safe shipping industry and reliable subsistence of hydrotechnical facilities on waterways making up some 100 thousand kilometres are provided for by 16 state-owned basin authorities in charge of inland waterways and navigation, which belong to the structure, administrated by River Fleet Service of the Ministry of Transport of the Russian Federation.
The mentioned state bodies, that were built up in accordance with geographical (basin-oriented) principles of administration, are providing for a unifed policy concept of general technical development, just as well-purposed use of state investments allocated for the development of this sector.
Currently almost any type of cargo can be moved by river vessels using inland waterways as part of the well-developed network of transportation links of Russia during April to November period. These waterways also offer vast opportunities for movement of large size cargoes.
